Description of Position: Performs the functions of a licensed practical nurse in assisting, planning, implementing, and evaluating all residents on unit in collaboration with Registered Nurse.

Location: Edmonton, AB
Full time: Mon to Fri days


Responsible for adhering to all standards of nursing practice, and the Health Professions Act of Alberta; for managing supplies and equipment and personnel with the direction of the charge nurse; and for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments.

Educational Requirements:
Must have graduated from an accredited school for Licensed Practical Nurses with current license with CLPNA.

Position Requirements:
1. Participate in education conferences and in-services consistent with requirements of licensing regulations.
2. Update and maintain professional knowledge related to areas of practice.

Essential Functions:
1. Ability to read and write English in order to follow and give oral and written instructions.
2. Must be able to complete required paperwork and filing with high degree of accuracy.
3. Ability to observe resident's behavior and communicate observations in a professional and intelligent manner.
4. Physically capable of turning, stooping, bending, stretching, moving equipment and performing other related tasks.
5. Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. or the equivalent of one half of an adult (as in a two man transfer).
6. After receiving the appropriate training, must be able to operate standard business equipment such as computers, copiers, fax machines and telephones.

Position Responsibilities: Including, but not limited to the following;

1. Assess nursing care given by self and non-professional staff members. Identify problems and/or need for improvement and communicate this information to the Registered Nurse.
2. Assess the health status of residents included in medication rounds, as outlined in the Medication Administration policy and procedure.
3. Collect data from the resident, family and significant others, health care providers, individuals, and/or agencies in the community. Collect data by: interview, observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation, and reports and records.
4. Organize assessment data so that it is accurate, complete, and accessible, and so that it remains confidential.
5. Communicate assessment data in an orderly fashion by recording, updating, and communicating among the health team daily and revising as appropriate.
6. Review and revise policies and procedures when requested.
7. Suggest ways to solve problems and make improvements on the unit.
8. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, contribute to the formulation of assigned resident's care plans.
9. Identify resident problems and communicate to the Registered Nurse.
10. Cooperate with the Registered Nurse in implementing planned changes and activities to improve nursing care on the unit.
11. Promote harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the health care team.
12. Assist with orientation of new employees.
13. Participate with Registered Nurse on the unit in the implementation of resident care plans.
14. Document nursing actions implemented and effectiveness of implementation in the nurses' notes.
15. Perform all other duties, as requested by supervisor(s), with a positive attitude.
